Sterile processing technician interview questions

Practice questions organized by the five hands-on areas HSPA uses for the CRCST's 400 hours, with the HSPA task each question maps to. We wrote these questions ourselves from HSPA's official task list; they are not collected from real interviews, and the answers depend on your department's policies and the manufacturers' instructions.

Decontamination (HSPA: 120 hours)

Walk me through what you do when a tray comes into decontam from the OR.

HSPA task area: Sorting complex instrumentation, selecting solutions and cleaning implements, manual and mechanical cleaning.

How to prepare: Describe the steps in order and say where you would check the manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU).

How do you decide which washer cycle or cleaning method to use for an instrument?

HSPA task area: Interpretation of manufacturers' IFUs; selection of washer cycles; mechanical cleaning compatibility.

How to prepare: The honest answer is "the IFU and our department policy"; explain how you would look it up.

The OR needs a tray turned around fast. How do you prioritize?

HSPA task area: Prioritization of turnover trays using the schedule and verbal communication with the OR and clean-side leadership.

How to prepare: Show that you check the case schedule and talk to the OR and your lead, without skipping steps.

What daily checks would you do on a washer before using it?

HSPA task area: Daily quality-control testing; equipment functionality checks; inspecting washer rack arms.

How to prepare: Name the checks your training covered and say you'd document them.

Preparation & packaging (HSPA: 120 hours)

How do you inspect an instrument before it goes in a set?

HSPA task area: Identification, inspection and testing of instruments.

How to prepare: Talk about checking cleanliness, function and damage, and what you do with an item that fails.

When would you use a pouch, a flat wrap or a rigid container?

HSPA task area: Packaging techniques (pouches, flat wraps, rigid containers); inspecting containers and wrapping material.

How to prepare: Say you follow the count sheet, the container or wrap IFU and department policy.

A count sheet doesn't match the tray. What do you do?

HSPA task area: Assembly and labeling.

How to prepare: Don't guess: explain how you'd escalate to your lead and document it.

Sterilization & disinfection (HSPA: 120 hours)

What do you do if a sterilizer cycle aborts or you find a wet load?

HSPA task area: Troubleshooting aborted/failed cycles, wet loads and repairs.

How to prepare: Describe stopping, not releasing the load, following policy and reporting it.

What records do you keep for a sterilizer load?

HSPA task area: Logging and record keeping, including biological indicators and incubation.

How to prepare: Explain why traceability matters for recalls and patient safety.

What's the difference between high- and low-temperature sterilization, and when is each used?

HSPA task area: High- and low-temperature sterilization processes.

How to prepare: Keep it to what you know and tie it back to the device's IFU.

Storage & distribution (HSPA: 24 hours)

How do you handle and rotate sterile supplies?

HSPA task area: Handling and putting away sterile supplies; rotating supplies; event-related shelf life.

How to prepare: Mention checking package integrity and what makes an item no longer sterile under event-related shelf life.

How would you build a case cart from a pick list?

Quality assurance (HSPA: 16 hours)

Tell me about a time you caught a mistake before it reached the OR.

HSPA task area: Standards, regulations, policies and procedures; documentation.

How to prepare: Use a specific example (from training if you're new) and what you documented.

How do you keep track of instruments and equipment?

HSPA task area: Equipment tracking; documentation and record keeping.

How to prepare: If you've used a tracking system, name it; if not, say how you'd learn it.

Lead tech and supervisor interviews

HSPA's leadership credential (CHL) tests four domains: planning and decision making, organizing, leading, and controlling. Expect questions in each: how you'd plan staffing for a heavy OR day, organize the workflow between decontam and prep, coach a tech who keeps making the same error, and track quality problems over time.
